Family Things to Do in the Texas Hill Country
We love all that this area has to offer for families to do together. If you’re traveling with kiddos, here are a few things you’re going to want to do during your visit.
1. Explore Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
Get ready for an experience the whole family will love! The climb to the top of Enchanted Rock will be filled with family fun and wonder at the sites along the way. The breathtaking views of the Texas Hill Country from atop the pink granite dome will not disappoint.
Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch in this remarkable setting. The park also offers hiking trails – almost 11 miles worth. It has uniquely been designated an International Dark Sky Park. If you’ve been wanting to take in the beauty of the night sky without intruding city lights, this is most definitely the place for stargazing.
2. Discover Wildlife at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch
Go on a thrilling safari adventure from the comfort of your car! Drive through their habitat and see exotic animals up close and personal. It’s hilarious when they stick their heads in your window, hoping you purchased their favorite snack at the entrance.
The drive takes about an hour and a half. You can go through as many times as you’d like on the day you visit, as long as you don’t leave the park in between. The wildlife ranch is a fun and educational experience for all ages and includes a petting zoo. Pack a picnic lunch or eat at their Safari Camp Grill.
3. Tour the Underground at Natural Bridge Caverns
Go 180 feet underground to marvel at naturally occurring caverns under the Hill Country! The wonder of these caves is unlike anything you’ve seen before.
Natural Bridge Caverns, close to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, also offers above-ground attractions for all ages. This includes a ropes course, mining for gems, and even a seasonal bat flight viewing. You can enjoy a bite to eat and a trip through the souvenir shop to round out your day of exploration.
4. Spend the Day on Canyon Lake
If a day on the water is what you seek, look no further. Offering boating, swimming, fishing, and all things water play, the lake is a fantastic recreation destination for family fun.
Boat and water toy rentals are available. There’s also a marina to visit. You’ll find beach-type areas that are great for swimming. You can walk atop the Canyon Dam and take in the beautiful views of the lake on one side and the Hill Country on the other – or relax at various parks that offer the perfect picnic or grilling backdrop.

Romantic Things to Do in the Texas Hill Country
With the collection of so many quaint towns that make up the Texas Hill Country and the number of unique venues to be found in each, this is the perfect area for a romantic getaway. Let’s look at 5 of our top recommendations.
1. Savor the Flavor in Texas Wine Country
Sip on award-winning wines at one or several of the local wineries located from Wimberly to Dripping Springs, and Johnson City to Fredricksburg, to name a few.
Share a romantic vineyard picnic to unwind or take a private or guided tour.
There are so many fantastic, local wineries. Here are just a few to get you started:
- Limestone Terrace Vineyard in Wimberly
- Driftwood Estate Winery in Driftwood
- Soloro Estate Vineyards and Winery in Dripping Springs
- Farmhouse Vineyards in Johnson City
- Lost Draw Cellars in Fredricksburg
No matter which ones you choose, you’re sure to enjoy savoring the flavors of the Texas Hill Country.
2. Stroll the Streets of Fredericksburg
Main Street in Fredericksburg is the place to be if you’re looking for charming shops and boutiques to explore. Some even give out free, cold beer you can drink as you stroll the streets – usually a big hit with the guys who may be less inclined to shop.
The local cuisine is a treat for your taste buds. You can even visit a working wildflower farm while you’re there.
3. Experience the San Marcos River
One of the things you’ll hear a lot about in the Texas Hill Country is tubing the rivers that flow in and around the beautiful towns here. Along with tubing, there are other river adventures to experience.
Have you ever wanted to try paddleboarding? How about taking a canoe or kayak down the river? Well, now’s your chance! The San Marcos River is a beautiful place to take in the serenity of the Texas Hill Country.
4. Dine and Listen at Local Live Music Venues
A favorite local pastime involves good country music, food, cold beer, and rodeo. We have several venues in town that check all the boxes:
- Visit The District on 46 for dinner options, shopping, and live music all in one place.
- Stop by Screaming Goat Yard & Tap for a great beer and cocktail menu paired with live music. And, yes, they do have precious miniature goats on site and an occasional goat yoga class!
- Take in a Texas Hill Country experience at Tejas Rodeo Company, complete with a steakhouse on the grounds with live music and dancing after the rodeo.
You can’t go wrong with any of these venues. The atmospheres capture the qualities of fun, light-heartedness, and relaxation in true Texas Hill Country form.
5. Dance the Night Away at Historic Gruene Hall
Pull on your boots and two-step through the historic town of Gruene! Spend the afternoon taking in the unique offerings of the charming stores.
Stop at an outdoor music venue for a cold drink and the general store for an ice cream. Follow that up with a romantic, candlelit dinner for two.
Then walk to Gruene Hall for the best live country music and dance the night away!
