From raw land to a memorable family farm stay in Texas
Back in 2018, we were on the hunt for land, nothing fancy, just a place where we could put down roots and dream a little. Michelle had that gut feeling the minute we stepped onto this property. Luke, being Luke, trusted it… and then promptly started dreaming up about 47 future projects before we even closed. (Classic.)
After exploring the property, our then 3-year-old pointed at a tree house which was the only ‘structure’ on the property and proudly exclaimed, “That’s the Bird Haus!” And just like that, the property got its name. What started as a toddler’s adorable mix-up has now become the heart of everything we do—welcoming families, creating memories, and sharing this little slice of heaven with guests.
Once the land was officially ours, everything kicked into high gear. Luke built our house in just a couple of months—yes, months—and as soon as we moved in, we jumped straight into our next project: a guest house. The Roost didn’t exist yet, it was just an idea, some sketches, and Luke’s eternal optimism. Picture us burning the candle at both ends for two straight months: Michelle painting anything that didn’t move, Luke tackling every finish-out known to humankind, the kids asleep in their beds, and us jamming to music like we were back in college again. Exhausting? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
And then… COVID hit. Naturally, we decided, Hey, let’s build another rental! Great timing, right? Originally we thought it might be a long-term rental, but short-term just made more sense, especially when everyone suddenly needed somewhere peaceful and safe to retreat to. Several months later, a pair of tiny houses basically fell into our laps. We gave them a light remodel, thrifted pretty much every single furnishing, and somehow made it all work. We fell in love with hosting guests and seeing people enjoy the property. We’ve already remodeled the Roost three times. Apparently we’re incapable of leaving well enough alone.
By 2022, we were feeling brave (or delusional) enough to host our first pumpkin patch on the property—at the exact same time we decided to dig out a swimming hole. Because why do one huge project when you can do two? The property has continued to grow and change ever since. We’ve raised dozens of chickens, rotated through at least three coops, brought in cows, built fence after fence after fence, planted grass and flowers, tried vegetable gardening in more spots than we can count, added rainwater systems, and spent way too much money on infrastructure. There’s always a new project… and always a new story.
Today, Bird Haus Farms is home to four unique short-term rentals, each one with its own personality and charm:
- The Perch – a tiny house with everything you need for a fun and memorable stay (sleeps 6)
Stay at the Perch - The Roost – our first big build, spacious and family-friendly (sleeps 8)
Stay at the Roost - The Hummingbird – a sweet and simple tiny retreat (sleeps 2)
Stay at the Hummingbird - The Nest– a tiny house with the most incredible views (sleeps 4)
- Stay at the Nest
We also manage a beautiful riverfront property just down the road—separate from Bird Haus Farms about 20 minutes away but filled with the same heart and hospitality. It sleeps 8, has room for everyone to unwind, and offers peaceful water views that make it a guest favorite.
Stay at the River Haus
Bird Haus Farms has been a joy-filled, slightly chaotic, deeply meaningful adventure. Every board nailed, every coop rebuilt, every muddy boot, every sunrise is all part of cultivating this little slice of heaven. We love getting to share it, and we truly believe we were called to create a space where families can slow down, breathe deep, and enjoy God, each other, and creation.
We wouldn’t trade this wild journey for anything.
